RELEVANT PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

As a teacher

I currently use my experience and theoretical knowledge to tailor bespoke lessons for multilingual groups of ESOL learners at levels from Entry 1 to Level 1, attempting to help them meet their particular language needs in daily life, maximise their chances of success in Trinity ESOL examinations, and prepare for the transition to English GCSE. In previous EFL roles, I also taught EAP and general English to learners ranging in age from 11 to senior citizen, in both monolingual and multilingual groups and one-to-one, while at the University of Manchester I lectured in Russian history and culture, using materials I developed myself. Other duties involved creating and assessing examinations, marking coursework, and offering guidance and support to individual students.

As a teacher-trainer

I facilitate intensive face-to-face introductory courses for trainee EFL teachers, modelling common teaching techniques to impart insights into teaching grammar, lexis and skills, and providing opportunities for trainees to put these techniques into practice during observed teaching sessions. The TEFL Academy course is at level 5 on the UK RQF, while the UK-TEFL course is at level 3.

As an academic manager

My role as Area Academic Manager for Target English International entailed observing every teacher twice across seven centres around the UK, for internal quality assurance and to comply with British Council accreditation requirements. I offered developmental feedback in person and in writing to each teacher, while ensuring that all observation paperwork was completed in a timely manner. I also provided assistance and support as necessary to centre managers and directors of studies. As acting Director of Studies for Relod-Yug, I designed syllabuses and lesson plans around the client’s key criteria of conversational fluency and clarity of written communication in the corporate environment. I also set and assessed written and oral examinations to gauge student progress.

As an applied linguist

Between 2001 and 2018, I worked as a self-employed interpreter and translator from Russian into English, working with Russian sources in a wide range of subject areas. Latterly, I  specialised in literary and academic translation, with my work appearing inter alia in books published by Routledge, I.B. Tauris, And Other Stories, Manchester University Press, and Bloomsbury Academic.
